About Metropolitan Medical Center HISTORY AND HERITAGE IT ALL STARTED WITH A VISION In 1962, six visionaries saw the future of medical care. A group of renowned doctors (namely, Dr. Pacifico Yap, Dr. Victor So Yee Piu, Dr. Go Kiat Su), and a group of top businessmen from Christian Gospel Church (namely (Mr. James Cu, Mr Amado Lim, and Mr. Lim Kong Gee) envisioned putting up a tertiary level hospital in the heart of downtown Manila. A MISSION TO PROMOTE CHRISTIANITY In April 1968, with the two able groups, together called United Doctors Service Corporation, the vision of a Metropolitan Hospital came to life. With a mission to promote Christianity through providing genuinely caring medical services, the hospital was given its Chinese name that translates as “founded in honour and reverence to Christ.” Metropolitan Hospital began its service to the public with a 3-storey 156-bed capacity edifice in Masangkay, Manila equipped with operating rooms, delivery rooms and nursery. The late Dr. Victor So was the first medical director of the hospital. 1970s – A DECADE OF RAPID GROWTH The 1970s showed rapid growth for the hospital as seen with its aggressive acquisition of that time’s latest medical equipment - 6 operating X-ray machines, a Hemodialysis machine, an intensive cardiac care unit and respirator machine. It was in the same decade when the coronary ICU was established (1971). In the mid-70s, a 2-storey building was constructed inside the hospital compound that housed numerous doctors seeking affiliations with the growing hospital. In 1976, the hospital expanded up to the 6th floor with 308 beds in all. Around the same year, the Metropolitan Hospital College of Nursing was born. Hence, the hospital became known for its superior medical care not only throughout the greater Manila area but all over the country. 2000s - A NEW NAME, A NEW FACE In 2005, Metropolitan Hospital stepped up to a new level in the industry. With this, a new name and face was given. Metropolitan Hospital became Metropolitan Medical Center. The new face symbolizes the growing and nurturing aspects of the tree and the green color manifests life and healing of oneself. The gold color symbolizes the glow of health, excellence and quality. This solidifies its dream to leap to a higher level of service and competence. 2010s & ONWARDS – PROGRESS AS A WAY OF LIVING Throughout Metropolitan Medical Centre’s history, a common theme prevailed: Progress. Continued advancement in medical learning, continued expansion of its physical amenities, continued acquisition of the best and state-of-the-art medical equipment – all these were at the core of Metropolitan Medical Centre. And rest-assured, it will always be. Such paradigm of unending desire for progress has brought about the birth of 3 Centres of Excellence: The Heart & Cardiovascular Institute, the Oncology or Cancer Institute, and a bigger and better Endoscopic Institute. With the ever-present need of bringing the future of medical services today, Metropolitan Medical Centre continues to reinvent itself – every day. A HOME FOR THE PEOPLE WHO FORMED THE HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINES With the knowledge and skills of the esteemed medical practitioners in the country, Metropolitan Hospital is trusted by many significant people in the history of the Philippines, including Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and several former presidents of the Republic of the Philippines.
